CLIMATE AND ENERGY

IWB and WWF are working together for the expansion of renewable, climate-friendly electricity and heat supply in and around Basel, committed to increasing power and heat efficiency and encouraging the public and politicians to do the same. The partners jointly develop ideas for new environmental products and services. Moreover, WWF and IWB collaborate to improve the passing of fish through IWB hydropower plants and to achieve, or maintain in the longer term, their certification with the naturemade star quality label. This primarily applies to those hydropower plants wholly owned by IWB, but also to other IWB holdings. The overall aim is to realise improvements in the passing through of fish and water protection.

Production of electricity from renewables

IWB has set itself the target of expanding, by 2020, the production of domestic, renewable electricity by at least 5% of the current electricity supply to end customers (relative to 2014). Measured is the electricity production from renewables in GWh. The scope of application comprises all business areas of IWB.

By the end of 2018, an increase of the electricity production from domestic renewables of approx. 3% over 2014 was achieved (absolute actual value 2018: 1,335.7 GWh).

Comment: The Wood-fired Power Plant II started its operation at the end of 2018. The annual production should amount to 27 GWh, a significant contribution to achieving the targets from 2019 onwards.

Production of green electricity

IWB has set itself the target of doubling the green electricity in the IWB production mix from 24 (2015) to 48 GWh (2018). Measured is the proportion of green electricity in the production mix in GWh (naturemade star-certified electricity and solar power from Switzerland). The scope of application comprises all IWB departments.

In 2018, the share of green electricity in the production mix amounted to 34.8 GWh, which equals an increase of 45% over 2015.

Comment: Production from PV plants funded by IWB only amounted to 13 GWh in 2018. The target value was not attained, in spite of further expansion projects in 2018. HKW II has not been certified by naturemade star yet and production will only start from 2019.

Expansion of climate-friendly gas supply

IWB has set itself the target of increasing, by 2018, the share of biogas in supply to private customers to 5% (and to 100% climate-friendly gas by 2050). Measured is the proportion of biogas relative to the supply of natural gas to private customers, as a percentage. The scope of application comprises all IWB departments.

IWB has achieved its target, the share of biogas amounting to 5% in 2018.

Increasing energy efficiency

IWB has set itself the target of reducing the power consumption of end customers with a consumption of less than 500 MWh/year in the grid territory (corrected for the number of end customers) by 1.5% each year (taken as an average over the years 2016 – 2018), relative to the average consumption of the years 2013 – 2015. Measured is the total energy consumption of end customers (reporting date 31.12.2015) with a consumption < 500 MWh/year in GWh

In 2017, the energy consumption of end customers of IWB decreased by more than 1.5% compared to the previous year (absolute actual value 2017: 495 GWh).

Comment: The target value for 2017 can be determined in 2019 and was achieved. Due to the billing process, the data for 2018 will not be available before March 2020.

Increasing thermal efficiency

IWB has set itself the target of reducing the heat consumption of end customers within its grid territory (corrected for air-conditioning) by 0.5% each year (taken as an average over the years 2016 – 2018), relative to the average consumption of the years 2013 – 2015. Measured is the heat consumption of end customers within the IWB grid territory in GWh. The scope of application comprises all IWB departments.

In 2017, the heat consumption of end customers of IWB decreased by over 0.5% (absolute actual value 2017: 2,255 GWh).
